Baumkuchen is a German sweet that represents the annual rings of a tree. In Japan, it is often used for wedding favors and gifts. It’s not too sweet and goes well with coffee. It’s hard to tell from the photo because it’s bite-sized, but it’s characterized by a round shape with a donut-like hole.

Jagariko is a super addictive Japanese snack. The ingredients are potatoes, and it’s a candy that seems to be as long-selling as potato chips.

じゃがりこは日本の超ハマるスナック菓子です。材料はじゃがいもでポテトチップスと同じくらいロングセラーになりそうな駄菓子です。

A long time ago, when I was playing with leftover potatoes, my grandparents scolded me, saying, “I ate them💢.” This is because during the war my grandparents could only eat potatoes and sweet potatoes. It would be nice if they could eat potatoes, and some people seemed to eat weeds and insects. The spirit of not leaving food behind is deeply ingrained in the Japanese genes. Thanks to my grandparents for surviving the war, I am grateful that I am able to eat a lot of delicious food this year as well.

昔、食べ残したじゃがいもで遊んでいたら「私が食べたのに💢」と、すごく祖父母に怒られました。というのも、祖父母は戦時中じゃがいもやさつま芋しか食べられる物がなかったからです。じゃがいもも食べられたらいい方で、雑草や虫を食べていた人もいたようです。食べ物を残すともったいないという精神は日本人の遺伝子に深く刻まれております。今年も美味しいものを沢山食べて過ごせるのも、祖父母が戦時中を生き延びてくれたおかげなので感謝ですね。
